Casas Grandes, Casas Chicas: Cottage Industries of Paquime and Mata Ortiz October 1, 2009 - March 1, 2010 This exhibit explores the cottage industries of the northern Mexico archaeological site of Casas Grandes and the modern Mata Ortiz community in the same region. Included are over 50 examples of prehistoric Casas Grandes pottery, modern attempts to copy the pottery, and the distinctive style developed in Mata Ortiz. The exhibit also includes simple shell objects of adornment from the past, contemporary silver, turquoise, coral, jet, and shell jewelry.
The exhibition is a cooperative venture between the Museum of History and the Museum of Archaeology. Contemporary material from Mata Ortiz is on loan from the artists.
