New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency, and officials in Ruidoso ordered nearly 8,000 residents to immediately evacuate Monday evening. Shelters have been set up for both people and pets and livestock fleeing the fire.
Governor Abbott’s controversial border security mission Operation Lone Star has recently armed the Texas National Guard soldiers with pepper ball launchers. An Texas prisoner has been indicted in the November 2023 death of a guard.
