Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!

Saturday at 9am

For a wacky and whip-smart approach to the week's news and newsmakers, listen no further than Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, the oddly informative news quiz from NPR.

During each fast-paced, irreverent show, host Peter Sagal leads what might be characterized as the news Olympics. Callers, panelists, and guests compete by answering questions about the week's events, identifying impersonations, filling in the blanks at lightning speed, sniffing out fake news items, and deciphering limericks. Listeners vie for a chance to win the most coveted prize in radio: having official judge and scorekeeper Carl Kasell record the outgoing message on their home answering machine.

Finally, here's comic and actor Chelsea Peretti, who joined us by Zoom just last November. I asked her about her origins as a superhero.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

SAGAL: Was there a moment - for example, I know Alonzo was - when he was working as an airplane mechanic, he was, like, making his colleagues laugh. And he decided, maybe I should go try it for a living. Was there a moment when you decided that you were going to be a comic?

Here's something else that exploded over social media - the career of comedian Ali Wong. It was a Netflix stand-up special that everybody was talking about that made her a star almost overnight, as she told us when she joined us in December of 2019.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

ALI WONG: Oh, yeah. I mean, it's a true story that when I warmed up for my special in my hometown, San Francisco, I did four shows at this comedy club that was a 400-seater. And I couldn't sell it out. So they had to put my tickets up on Groupon.
