48 Hour Film Project

A unique filmmaking event returns to the borderland this summer requiring filmmaking teams to create shoot and complete a short film in under 48 hours. In this week's On Film, Host Charles Horak discusses the event with the event's City Producer for El Paso area, Karen Berry.

The 48 Hour Filmmaking Project is a unique creative competition requiring teams of filmmakers to shoot, edit, and complete a short film on 48 hours or less. This is a fantastic opportunity to get you started in the Filmmaking industry, this project shows people what seems impossible turning into something possible, a challenge that comes with its ups and downs becoming more difficult by the minute. From accross the border in Ciudad Juarez, El Paso and Las Cruces are invited to accept this year's challenge!

The winner of Best Film goes to Filmapalooza in March 2025, and is eligible for a spot in our screening at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner!

The deadline to register your team is now until August 6th, the latest date to register is August 16th.

Charles Horak didn't sleep much as a child, preferring instead to watch movies on late night TV. Not much has changed since then, except that he now shares his life-long passion for movies with others. Horak's association with On Film began in the summer of 2002 when he was interviewed by the show's originator, Cynthia Haines. In the summer of 2005, Horak took over for Haines as host of the show.
Sam Cassiano is a native Californian who spent his formative years in the Bay Area. An army brat, his family toured Germany and Japan before settling in El Paso in 1973. Initially a Communications Major at UTEP, a radio internship at KPAS-FM 94, the PASS launched his broadcasting career. He can be heard as the morning news anchor on KTEP during NPR's Morning Edition, and Friday evenings at 10 pm as the host of Friday Night Blues.
