Erika Edwards recently joined the History Departmentfor the University of Texas at El Paso, but her first dream in life was none other than to be a flower. In this edition of We Are UT El Paso, Dr. Erika Edwards opens the door for us and talks about what it was like wanting to become a teacher and then getting discouraged as the connection did not flow naturally; Dr. Edwards also addresses her experiences being a black female historian researching abroad in Cordoba, Argentina.

Dr. Erika D. Edwards is an Associate Professor of Latin American History. She received her PhD from Florida International University in Atlantic History with concentrations in Latin America and Pre-colonial Atlantic Africa. She is the author of the award-winning book, Hiding in Plain Sight: Black Women, the Law, and the Making of a White Argentine Republic, which is a gendered analysis of black erasure and the construction of race in Argentina.
