Songs We Love: Nocturnal Sunshine, 'Take Me There'

Maya Jane Coles, who performs as Nocturnal Sunshine.

London DJ Maya Jane Coles records under many names, and seems to aim for accuracy in her aliases. Under her given name, she creates the house music that's made her famous (Nicki Minaj helped by sampling a 2010 Coles track in a recent single). With Lena Cullen, Coles makes dubtronica and calls their group She is Danger. And as Nocturnal Sunshine, Coles makes deep-house and dubstep beats that are simultaneously dark and bright.

"Take Me There" is the truest dubstep track on Nocturnal Sunshine's self-titled debut, which came out this week. It hits the sub-bass lines and syncopation intrinsic to the genre, but is run through with Coles' high-energy vocals and a glittering, danceable beat that reflects her experience and mastery across electronica. It's a nervy, frenetic dance mix smothered in molasses. Too heavy to float, but not too dark to shine.
