Joanna Newsom Enters The Realm Of Fantasy

Joanna Newsom
Annabele Mehran

Joanna Newsom's bright, piercing vocals are immediately recognizable and uniquely hers. And while the the singer and harpist hasn't released a record since 2010's Have One On Me, her voice is as significant as ever. In a new single from her forthcoming dual LP Divers, Newsom inserts herself into a fantasy world rich with harmony and syncopation. "Leaving the City" twists through sweet harp passages through a chorus that sounds near to metal and feels reminiscent of the Tolkein-steeped rock of bygone decades. And still, that voice soars above it all.

Divers comes out Oct. 23 on Drag City.
