The Dieting Guidelines Advisory Committee had recommended to the US Department of Agriculture that Americans be instructed to eat less meat for the sake of the environment.  Those guidelines were rejected by Republican members of Congress who were under pressure by the meat industry.

Outbreaks of food-borne diseases such as E. coli have led to the removal of wildlife from commercial vegetable crops, in the belief that wildlife fecal matter was causing these outbreaks.   However, removal of wildlife has not decreased these illnesses.  Some ecologists believe that an increase of wildlife in these areas would strengthen vegetable crops.  Read more at http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/wildlife-removed-from-veg-crops.html
