EL PASO, Texas (KTEP) - A 29-year-old suspect allegedly drove his vehicle toward law enforcement officers before he was shot and killed, according to a custodial death report submitted to the Texas Attorney General's Office.
Luis Angel Garcia was attempting to flee from the members of a drug task force on June 29th after they tried to stop him on Zaragoza Road at a busy intersection in far East El Paso. Garcia drove his car toward officers standing outside their vehicles according to the report by the Constable Precinct 4 office.
"Fearing for their lives, the officers fired their weapons in an attempt to stop the threat against them," according to the custodial report. "The decedent was struck in the right upper chest by a bullet."
Garcia was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The task force included Homeland Security Investigations agents, deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the Constable Precinct 4 office. The constable report did not indicate how many members of the drug task force were on the scene or which deputy or agent shot Garcia.
The FBI took the lead in the multi-agency investigation of the"assault on a federal officer." An unidentified 28-year-old man who fled the scene was later found and arrested according to the FBI.
