In the final installment of our visit to the 2004 Aspen Music Festival, NPR's Fred Child welcomes the American Brass Quintet to the stage in Harris Hall. The brass chamber ensemble was formed in 1960 and its current lineup features trumpeters Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb, horn player David Wakefield and trombonists Michael Powell and John Rojak (bass).
The ABQ performs the opening movement from Steven Sacco's "Quintet," followed by three tunes from trumpeter Raymond Mase's collection of Thomas Morley transcriptions, called Elizabethan Ayres: "Fyer, fyer," "Gaude Maria Virgo," and "I folow, lo, the footing." Then the ABQ closes with the "Red Lion" movement from Eric Ewazen's Colchester Fantasy.
