The Documentary film, DURANGUITO, depicting the long battle to preserve a beloved historic Barrio will be shown at Sunset Parlor, 1307 N. Oregon, on Friday July 26, 2024.
El Paso, TX: Duranguito: The Film is a superb documentary about the historic struggle to save El Paso’s oldest barrio from the bulldozers. The showing is a Fundraiser sponsored by Project Regeneracion, a non-profit organization working to support and empower barrio residents and advocate for the preservation of historic neighborhoods. Film by Nikki Martinez and Zane Abraham.
A story of two women’s resistance to City Hall demands to leave their homes so the neighborhood could be razed in order to construct a sports arena in its place. Their resistance spurred a seven year-long-battle against corruption, deceit, and the forced displacement of long-time elderly residents from their homes. Disregard of the region’s early multi-ethnic history and the attempt to replace its vestiges with a controversial arena at taxpayers’ expense continues to leave the future of the barrio in limbo. The fight to save Duranguito is far from over.
After a deceptive bond initiative passed in 2012, wealthy developers and city officials conspired to construct an arena within downtown El Paso’s oldest neighborhood, all while its elderly residents, led by 94-year-old Antonia Morales, battled the attempts at forced displacement and the complete destruction of their historic border community.
"Duranguito" focuses on the experiences of lower-income, elderly, Mexican American women immigrants and their supporters in response to official and unofficial corruption and deceit.
