LA FE PRESENTS: Authors Denise Chávez, Gris Muñoz, Zita Arocha, and Alessandra Narváez Varela
IN PROUD CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH — Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe cordially invites our community members to its March 28th Café Quetzalcoatl Cultural-Arts Series event. Join us for an evening with four of La Frontera’s great literary voices: Denise Chávez, Gris Muñoz, Zita Arocha, and Alessandra Narváez Varela.
This free community gathering will take place at 6 p.m. at the La Fe Culture and Technology Center’s Auditorium, 721 S. Ochoa (REAR BUILDING), El Paso, TX 79901 – in the heart of El Paso’s historic Segundo Barrio. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Bring students, educators, artists, poets, writers, and dreamers!
Community members of all ages are welcome. Sales of books and other items at this event directly support these independent, local artists. Your patronage of our community’s arts is deeply appreciated.
Refreshments, snacks, and vegan options will be served. Admission and parking are free. Space is limited. Early arrival is recommended. This event is made possible thanks to support from the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD), the Community Alliance Supporting Educational Alternatives (CAPEA), and community members like you!
ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
• DENISE CHÁVEZ is a US-Mexico Borderland author and cultural-arts and community advocate. Chávez’ 1994 novel “Face of An Angel”, her critically acclaimed 2001 “Loving Pedro Infante” and 2014’s “The King and Queen of Comezón” are considered essential reading and classics of Southwest and Chicana literature. Chávez most recent book is “Street of Too Many Stories” (May 2024, Conocimientos Press). She is the owner of Casa Camino Real Bookstore in Las Cruces. Her longtime project is the creation of Museo de La Gente, a community archival resource center.
• ZITA AROCHA is an award-winning journalist, former head of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and a professor emeritus at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Department of Communications. Her new book, “Guajira — The Cuba Girl,” is both memoir and a moving tale of exile and survival in a new land.
• GRIS MUÑOZ is a powerful blend of Chicana spoken-word artistry, poetry, and storytelling. She is the author of “Coatlicue Girl,” a finalist for the John A. Robertson Award for Best First Book of Poetry by the Texas Institute of Letters. Muñoz is the creative force behind the El Paso, Texas-based Coneja Leather Designs.
• “Thirty Talks Weird Love” is ALESSANDRA NARVÁEZ VARELA’s debut young-adult novel — now available in Spanish, on Audible, and at a bookstore near you. A native of Ciudad Juárez, Narváez Varela currently teaches at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Creative Writing Department.
