The El Paso City Council voted to extend Mayor Oscar Leeser's state of emergency on Monday in response to the arrival of thousands of asylum seekers at the border. It will last for 30 days before the council has to vote on reauthorizing it again. There were hugs, tears, and kisses between families standing on a long wooden platform in the middle of the dry Rio Grande. Hundreds waited on both sides of the border for a chance to see their loved ones.
