A new study published in the journal Nature Sustainability estimates the cost of blowing dust and wind erosion to be $154 billion dollars per year. And, that’s not all, the study also highlights the health risks dust storms pose for communities caught in their paths.
Researchers at the University of Texas at El Paso, George Mason University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture took part in a comprehensive assessment not done since the 1990s. KTEP’s Aaron Montes spoke with Thomas Gill, a co-author of the study and professor of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at UTEP about the study’s findings.
