Al-Qaida Letter Reprimands Difficult Employee
While AP West Africa Bureau Chief Rukmini Callimachi was covering the French military intervention in Mali, she gathered six trash bags full of abandoned al-Qaida documents from buildings used by the organization. Included was a copy of a scathing letter sent to Mokhtar Belmokhtar, which described him as a prima donna. He later quit the organization and formed his own group — carrying out attacks that killed 101 people.

China's Shuanghui Buys Pork Giant Smithfield For $4.7 Billion
A Chinese meat producer plans to buy the U.S. meat company Smithfield, the world's largest pork producer, for $4.7 billion. The Shuanghui company is enticing Smithfield's shareholders by offering $34 a share, about 30 percent more than Smithfield's current stock price.

Drone Said To Have Killed Key Pakistani Taliban Commander
Pakistani officials say Waliur Rehman was killed by a suspected U.S. drone strike. The U.S. has been offering a $5 million reward for information about him. Rehman is said to have been involved in a 2009 attack that killed seven Americans in Afghanistan — the worst loss of life in CIA history.

It isn't clear yet whether U.S. regulators will approve the takeover of the iconic American company by China's Shuanghui International. There are concerns that Shuanghui could ratchet up production to feed the growing demand for meat in China.
