  • The five-piece band known as The National — which toured as the opening act for The Arcade Fire, a Montreal band with a thundering orchestral sound --uses lush strings, clunky old pianos and assorted brass instruments to create odd, image-rich nighttime music on its fifth album, Boxer.
  • Actor Peter Fonda is probably best known for his role in the cult-classic road movie Easy Rider. His new picture, 3:10 to Yuma, is a Western — a remake of the 1957 film. Fonda, son of actor Henry Fonda, is author of the memoir Don't Tell Dad.
  • The Lives of Others, a spy film set in the former East Germany, won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck says it's "a human drama about the ability of human beings to do the right thing, no matter how far they have gone down the wrong path." It's due out on DVD Aug. 21.
  • Radio Express, a California-based production company, produces and exports pre-packaged music radio programming to more than 130 countries, including several in Africa. The company has just created "Jammin' Africa," a program that helps African artists get exposure across the continent. NPR's Tony Cox visited Radio Express, and spoke with members of the staff, including CEO Tom Rounds.
  • Russell Crowe is the ruthless black-hat, Christian Bale the reluctant hero in this remake of the 1957 Western. Ben Foster (the angel-winged good kid in the last X-Men extravaganza) plays Crowe's murderous sidekick.
  • Vocal coach Melissa Cross is known as the "Scream Queen" for her work teaching metal, punk and hardcore performers how to use their voice without ruining their vocal chords. She teaches them how to growl, bark, bellow and scream.
  • Guitarist and singer/songwriter Richard Thompson might be considered a cult artist — not widely known, but critically adored. He was a founding member of the vastly influential British folk band Fairport Convention. His new album is Sweet Warrior.
