The House Appropriations subcommittee on Monday heard from the new acting director of the IRS. It was the first of three hearings this week looking into controversies at the agency involving spending on conferences and the targeting of conservative groups for extra scrutiny.

Senate Committee Investigates Sexual Assaults In U.S. Military
Congress holds another hearing Tuesday on ways to reduce sexual assault in the military. Despite agreement that sexual assault is a problem, the military is struggling to find the most effective way of dealing with the problem. Congress wants to see more offenders go to jail or at least get kicked out of the service. But in fact there's little evidence that strategy will actually reduce the number of assaults.

Jell-O Tries Out Edgy Social Media Campaign
Jell-O launched an ad campaign last week called Fun My Life, which piggybacks off the profane Twitter hashtag #FML. Advertising consultants are divided over whether the campaign is brilliant or crosses the line of good taste.

Law Enforcement Celebrates Supreme Court's DNA Ruling
A divided Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Monday that it's constitutional for police to take DNA swabs from suspects who are arrested but not yet convicted of a crime. The court compared such DNA sampling to fingerprinting when a suspect is booked.

Moldova Grapples With Whether To Isolate TB Patients
Throughout the Soviet-era tuberculosis patients in Moldova were treated in special TB hospitals. But that system collapsed along with the Soviet Union. Now the Eastern European nation is struggling to cope with worst rate of drug-resistant TB in Europe. And there's a raging debate over whether infectious TB patients should be returned to sanitariums or be treated at home.

'Deacon' Jones, The NFL's Original Sackmaster, Dies
As a defensive lineman with the Los Angeles Rams in the '60s, Jones was one of the "fearsome foursome." He's also credited with coining the word "sack" for what's done to a quarterback when he's tackled behind the line of scrimmage. Jones is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Food For Thought In Shriver's 'Big Brother'
Lionel Shriver has never shied away from contentious topics. Her latest novel, Big Brother, tackles the hot-button issue of obesity as doll-maker Pandora deals with her brother — washed-up jazz pianist Edison — and his massive weight gain.
