Austin Film Society has been supporting Texas independent filmmakers for many years, and this year Dr. Sabiha A. Khan was awarded a film production grant for her proposal for short film documentary “Flatbread Friends”. After witnessing women in a burrito shop making tortillas by hand, she was reminded of Chapatis, a traditional flatbread from her culture. Inspired by this moment and her experiences with food, Dr. Sabiha reflected on the solitary connections that minorities make between one another in the borderlands and how food influences and connects them, which was the driving force of her future animated short film “Flatbread Friends”.
Dr. Sabiha A. Khan is a UTEP Assistant Professor of Communication specializing in Digital Media Production. Her research and production interests include the agro-ecological documentary, food studies, ecocriticism, public media and the public humanities.
