Blessed Be Man, a local post-rock band, is set to host a special charity concert to help celebrate a 20 year milestone of being a part of El Paso’s music scene. Frontman, Johnny Lopez, decided it would be best to celebrate by giving back to the community by asking for donations to The Child Crisis Center of El Paso. Blessed Be Man will be joined by fellow musician friends Travi and The Travettes, Get The Honey, and Cristina Gurrola to help make this show happen.
“That’s something I’ve always been big on, trying to give back to those who are less fortunate,” says Lopez, a former teacher.
Lopez used to teach special education while pursuing his creative outlet. He now works as a counselor; his experience in the education profession helped him decide which organization he could lend a hand to. “It’s very important to help out the youth of El Paso, there’s a lot going on,” added Lopez, “If we can brighten up their day by getting them a new set of clothes, or shoes, or toys, then I’ll feel like I’m trying to do my part and the music is just a bonus.”
The Child Crisis Center is a local non-profit organization which helps kids in need by protecting them from neglect and abuse by providing shelter and other services to help them regain a sense of normalcy. They are always in need of personal care items or clothes for children. They request that items should be new or unopened.
Although the event is titled “20 Years of Chuco Post Rock” expect a variety of music. Christina Gurrola will kick off the show with her acoustic songs and smooth vocals, Get The Honey will showcase their unique funky alternative style, Travi and The Travettes will tackle the stage with a garage rock sound. Finally, Blessed Be Man will complete the lineup by showing off their brand of post rock! As for the diversity of the lineup, Lopez says, “I think it’s cool to put a little bit of everything because El Paso has so much to offer, there’s so much talent, why should we limit ourselves to one genre?”
The show is set to happen this Saturday, October 17th at the Rosewood which is located in downtown El Paso at 412 San Antonio Ave. It will be a free 21 and older show. Whether you are a music fan looking to check out what the local music scene has to offer, or you’d like to help out the cause by donating, Lopez invites you to join him in this charitable milestone celebration.
