A sign at the entrance to the ICE detention center named Camp East Montana warns access to the facility at Fort Bliss is restricted.

A recent inspection of Camp East Montana found dozens of violations of federal standards at the nation's largest detention facility. The congressionally mandated inspection by Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Office of Detention Oversight happened February 10th through 12th. ICE posed the report on April 3rd.

"This is far and away the worst report of any ICE detention facility," said attorney Randall Kallinen who represents the family of Victor Manuel Diaz, a Nicaraguan man who died at the tent facility in January.

Despite the 49 violations, the detention center earned an acceptable/adequate rating with the recommendation that ICE work with the private contractor operating the facility to resolve the deficiencies that remain outstanding.

In March the Department of Homeland Security replaced that company Aquisition Logistics LLC, with Amentum Services, another private contractor.

DHS in a statement said, “This new contractor will allow Camp East Montana to continue abiding by the highest detention standards WITH the ability to provide MORE medical care on-site, This contract also allows more on-site staff and a PRECISE quality assurance surveillance plan. ICE will have even more oversight of the contractors at this facility.”

DHS did not comment directly on the violations revealed by the inspection.
