The Rubin Center at The University of Texas at El Paso and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Latino will host Descubra! A fun-filled weekend of activities for families and visitors of all ages. This special celebration provides an opportunity for families to enjoy a day of art making and viewing with local artists, Rubin Center staff, and the education team from the Smithsonian Museum of the American Latino. The exhibitions Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective, La Frontera, and Proving the Hypothesis of Celestial Flirtation will be on display at the Rubin Center, and visitors can see additional work from Collidoscope as well as the Chicano art collection of Gaspar Enriquez in San Elizario.
Each of the two days will include art demonstrations, hands-on art-making for all ages, music, and featured activities from the Smithsonian education team and Descubra! national collaborator, the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Families will be invited to participate in a variety of drop-in activities that will include making a lenticular image, scavenger art hunts, collage, and printmaking, and more. They will be invited to collaborate with artist Christin Apodaca as she paints a collaborative community art wall reflecting on Latinidad and the borderlands which will travel back to the Smithsonian in Washington DC after the event.
Complimentary refreshments, snacks, and music are included in this free family experience. Visitors are welcome to drop in at either or both locations.
