Chimpanzees laugh when playing, hug to show affection, use tools, and have complex family and social structures. And despite their designation as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, the National Institutes of Health has refused to retire some of the federally owned chimpanzees formerly used for research to the federal chimpanzee sanctuary.

On ACT Radio, Liz and Tom talk with Animal Protection of New Mexico’s Chief Program & Policy Officer Leslie Rudloff about the plight of 30 chimpanzees being kept in Alamogordo, New Mexico, as well recent legal developments that are finally giving hope for those that have long fought for their transfer to sanctuary.
