Local Band The Veronas Set To Take On New York City

Tony Pina
The Veronas opened their final gig in El Paso before going to New York.

The Veronas are a musical trio whose eclectic sound earned them two upcoming performances in New York. The band formed in early 2025 and consists of three members: bassist Said Hernandez, guitarist/vocalist Steven Garcia, and drummer Arturo “Tuyo” Hernandez. They have released three singles and two EPs which gave them enough material to perform at the third round of Lowbrow Palace’s Battle of The Bands, the show where their musicianship and desert rock sound caught the attention of RNI Management, who happened to be in attendance.

Toward the end of May, The Veronas announced that they would be performing, not one, but two shows outside of El Paso. These shows will take place on June 27 and June 28, with the first performance being a special live session for New York University’s college radio station WNYU. The second night will be a show at The Spare Room which is located inside New York City’s Gutter Bar. I was able to catch their last gig in El Paso before they set out to leave for New York. “We expect another challenge, it’s a milestone for sure,” bassist Said Hernandez said, “I honestly expect to feel a bit out of my comfort zone, but that’s what all this is about.”

Songs from their catalogue such as “The Wild You Are” and “Wicked Lady Blues” reintroduce a familiar sound by fusing together psychedelia and blues with rock and roll. The music compliments the smooth vocals well and ends up being reminiscent of the garage rock sound that was on heavy rotation in the 2000s and 2010s. Each instrument gets a chance to shine; “The Wild You Are” starts with a bassline that carries the song, meanwhile “Sol Syrfa” and “Verona” both feature an intro from the rhythm section which is built up by the drums and drives the songs. For their special upcoming gigs, they plan to not only represent themselves, but El Paso as well. “We do want to add that new flavor that we have of the border region, always crossing from Juarez to El Paso.” says Hernandez, “You know, represent and take that sound over there.”

New York is just their first big milestone as they have a lot more ideas and songs to bring to life. “We hope to come back with some new inspiration and inspire anyone else who wants to make music,” mentions Hernandez. Congratulations to Said Hernandez, Steven Garcia, and Arturo Hernandez on their latest achievement! For now, you can keep up with them on their journey to and from New York by following them on their Instagram and TikTok accounts.
