Dive into the heart of healthcare along the U.S.-Mexico border with Border Health Horizons. Through an international lens, we'll examine the distinct health challenges faced by our thriving border communities. From the complexities of cross-border healthcare to the groundbreaking solutions emerging from the heart of the border, this series serves as your guide to comprehending the health landscape within our region.

In partnership with the University of Texas at El Paso, our mission is to shine a spotlight on the initiatives, stories, and individuals working tirelessly to improve health outcomes on both sides of the border. Each episode will showcase in-depth conversations with healthcare professionals, community leaders, researchers, and advocates who are shaping the future of border health.

From exploring groundbreaking medical advancements to addressing the impact of culture on health practices, Border Health Horizons bridges gaps in understanding and fosters a global dialogue on border health issues. We believe that by sharing our experiences, innovations, and challenges, we can inspire positive change and promote the well-being of our diverse communities.

  • Dr. Emre Umucu and Dr. Jason Boyle introduce Dr. Shashwati Geed,who brings her vast knowledge in neuro-rehabilitation and brain plasticity to illustrate Tele-CPASS. Tele-CPASS is being researched in hopes of aiding post-stroke victims in having a normal life after such a traumatic event.
  • Dr. Emre Umucu, and Dr. Jason Boyle welcome to the studios Dr. Kisuk Min, UTEP Assistant Professor of Kinesiology to talk all about his mighty mice. Kisuk explains how his research model uses genetically modified mice to test out the effects of exercise on the animals' heart health and his hopes for this to advance to a human subject stage.
  • For this edition of Border Health Horizons, Dr. Emre Umucu talks on the phone with Dr. April G. Thomas, Associate Professor of Psychology to discuss her research on Why do adolescents take risks?; Dr. Thomas talks about the developmental factors that contribute on the risk taking process of adolescents and the possibility of 'positive risk taking'.
  • In the last installment of Border Health Horizons we are joined by Dr. Amy Wagler, who discusses the integration of advanced statistical methods in current research, the difference between using randomized controlled studies vs. using observational data, and how she uses AI for her own research.
  • Dr. Emre Umucu welcomes in the studio Dr. Salamah Salamah, former Chair of the Computer Science Department at UTEP, to talk about the roots and origins of AI, cybersecurity, data safety, and more.
