In this interview, we sit down with veteran of the American Early Music Movement, Mary Springfels, and Dr. Lindsey Macchiarella to talk about the Early Music Latin America Festival. Years in the making, this festival will include music from a variety of Latin American sources from the 15th-18th centuries, taking the listener on a unique journey.
The University of Texas at El Paso has been approved for a $28,000 Grants for Arts Projects award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the Early Music Latin America Festival. The performance will include music from a variety of Latin American sources from the 15th-18th centuries, such as the Codex Martínez Compañón from Peru, and the Cancionero musical de Gaspar Fernandes, from Mexico, and sacred and secular polyphony and dance music from Colonial Northwestern Guatemala.
The concert will take place on March 2, 2024, at 7:30 in the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Texas at El Paso. The virtual pre-concert lecture on representation and Early Latin American Music by Dr. Sarah Finley begins at 6 pm in the recital hall.
