Denise, John and Jan welcome Dr. Keving Floyd from the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens at UTEP to talk about migratory birds that are common in the area during the fall. He also discusses the upcoming FloraFest plant sale where the Good To Grow team will record a few radio episodes.
Dr. Floyd says he has been spotting western tanagers, sparrows, and hummingbirds. To provide habitat he encourages listeners to plant as many native plants to help the ecosystem and support migratory birds that are passing by. Apart from bird feeders, hummingbirds like tubular flowers such as red yucca. Sparrows enjoy grass seeds and sunflowers. Dr. Floyd also offers some information on birdwatching and places to visit around town.
For more information on the upcoming plant sale visit the FloraFest website. You can also find photos of birds and additional information on bird watching from the El Paso/Trans-Pecos Audubon Society. El Paso County Master Gardner’s website for questions, tips, and upcoming calendar events.
