UTEP Expertise Connector
Brandon Michael Merritt is Assistant Professor, Speech Language and Hearing Sciences, learn more on the UTEP Expertise Connector.

Dr. Brandon Merritt was a fan of superpowers as a child and discovered early on that he could not fly. He discovered that the word doesn’t work like comic books, which sparked his interest in science. Professor Merritt considers himself a speech scientist. He sat down with host Keith Pannell to discuss his research. His research focuses on the perception of gender from someone's voice.

Dr. Brandon Merritt examines communication sciences and disorders through a gender equitable lens. The first long-term goal of his research is to understand factors that influence listeners’ attribution of vocal gender for cisgender and transgender persons in English versus Spanish. The second long-term goal is to identify how the gender a listener attributes to a speaker impacts the listener’s evaluation of a speaker’s trustworthiness and communication competence and the listener’s ability to adapt to speech variability.
